Description

Alba water lily. (Nymphaea alba) (Native)

Alba water lily is the only native water lily in Britain where it is found in large pools and slow moving rivers and it is a magnificent plant. The flowers, which often appear two to four at a time, are white with light yellow centres and reach (10-13 cm) across. The blooms are cuplike in shape when they first open and then become stellate (star shaped) and the petals number from twelve to twenty-eight. They have a slight fragrance on the first day only.

  • The leaf colour is green on top and yellowish-green underneath they also have a red tinge on the margins. The leaf is round and the sinus is usually an open ‘V’, they grow to to 8-10 in (10-13 cm) across.
  • Planting depth above soil level 18-60in (45-150cm)
  • Position in full sun.
  • Spread 66in (170cm)
  • Alba is a large water lily and therefore needs plenty of room.
  • We would recommend a planting basket of at least 22cm across.
  • Water lilies are heavy feeders and benefit from a slow release fertilizer specially prepared for aquatic plants such as Growth Balls which can simply be pushed into the soil.
  • We ship all lilies bare root, this means that we wash the soil off before packing plants. During the summer months we may need to trim some of the foliage back for shipping.
