Description

Bog Myrtle (Myrica gale) moisture loving shrub

Bog myrtle is a deciduous shrub which has highly aromatic foliage. In spring it bears clusters of yellow and brown catkins at the ends of the shoots followed by small, yellow-brown berries .

  • Myrica gale occurs throughout much of Scotland, particularly in the west, from Dumfries and Galloway in the south, to the far north of the mainland, and including the Inner and Outer Hebrides and some parts of Orkney. It is most abundant in the Highlands, where its habitat requirements of wet, acidic soils are more ubiquitous. In Aberdeenshire and Angus the distribution is sparser, and in the Central Belt and Borders there are a few scattered populations, where the soil conditions are suitable.
  • Grow in wet or boggy soil and shelter from cold, drying winds.
  • Position – full sun or partial shade.
  • Height 60-150cm
  • We would recommend planting directly into moist soil.
  • We send all our plants bare root.  Theis means we wash the soil from the plants.  During the summer months we may need to trim some of the foliage back for shipping.
  • Contact us if you require more information.  We are available between 08:30am and 16:30pm Monday to Friday and also via our email.  Our plant team will be happy to help with any queries you may have.
